One of those few downsides, however, is if the article is so far off on the fringe that the content actually distracts from the website itself. For instance, a professional organization of accountants would likely have their website harmed by an in depth article about sex or politics that had nothing to do with their organization or even accountants in general.

And there is no question that content is a delicate balance, and one that changes over time and from search engine to search engine. This is because the current measure of content primarily deals with density, though companies like Yahoo tip the scale towards quantity - but even there they look for relevant quantity. Again, as a business owner you need to ask yourself if the professional article you wrote would interest someone in your profession and if it seems relevant. If the answer to that is yes, take off your sales hat and write the article in a manner that doesn't try to sell any of your services. In the end if your content is relevant to your business but does not attempt to sell your products, you will likely find that most engines will like the content, as will many people.

And do not forget to put navigational links at the top of the article page so that these potential customers can window shop your site as well!
