Marketing Charts reports that in September Google's U.S. Search Engine traffic increased half a percent to 57%, while Yahoo's increased four tenths of a percent to 23.7%. Microsoft's search traffic declined a full percent to 10.3% while Ask.com increased two tenths of a percent to 4.7%.

Website popularity remains strongly in the hands of online social networks, which should come as no surprise. MySpace.com and mail services from Yahoo and Microsoft continue to dominate in popularity. Ebay also shows popularity, but people by in large go to the Internet to communicate with other people. When we look only at searches and then further narrow the band by selecting shoppers - we find that online shopping, or e-commerce continues to grow at an incredible speed!

It appears that the fear of online shopping is fading - but name recognition is still an incredibly important concept! Another interesting factor is that the people that are heavy users of search engines make up for about a third of the online dollars spent. Again, the notable linkage is that the more comfortable someone is with the Internet as a whole, the more likely he is to shop at your site!

Dovetailing from this information is the likelihood that even relatively new Internet searchers are more likely to buy from you if they see your name more often than not. This means that you need to be spotted on the first page of the search engines, even if the click throughs do not result in many sales. Getting your name recognized will build familiarity and therefore confidence in your products and services.

Whether you are using a Pay Per Click (PPC) strategy, an organic strategy, or both - make sure your company name is easily seen. In PPC ads that is difficult to do, given the limited number of characters available in the ad. But you can be a bit ingenious.
